Uncle Fester Saw the Blues
It was 1933, and the San Mateo Blues were going to play the San Jose Bee for the championship of the California State League. Many celebrities were planning on attending, even Uncle Fester Addams, known then as Jackie Coogan. This was almost 40 years before Jackie Coogan played the role as Uncle Fester on the Addams Family TV series. Jackie was a child movie star from the scilent movie era. San Mateo residents remembered Jackie from his six week stay at the St. Mathews Hotel, were he stayed during the filming of “Johnny Get Your Hair Cut” (1927). In 1933, Johnny was a 19 year old college student attending Santa Clara University. After the game Jackie was quoted in the San Mateo Times,

“A great team San Mateo. Your Camozzi is the Buster Keaton of baseball.”
