San Mateo wallops Modesto for 20 hits, two of them homers, as four pitchers try to stem tide
The San Mateo Times, By Jerry The Modesto Reds winners of the Central California League were humbled by a score of 22 to 6 by the San Mateo Blues on the home lot yesterday afternoon. The visitors started by scoring two runs on many hits and walks, but after the Blues had come back in their half with three runs, they were never headed. There are a number of reasons why the Blues took their fourteenth straight game, but the main one was they outclassed the opposition. Snappy double plays, heady base running and stick work a la Ruth and Gehrig were the order of the day for the Fitzmen. Four Modesto pitchers were thrown into the maw of batsmen, the first one, King, being undoubtedly the best of the quartet. It is reasonable to believe if he had been left on the mound the carnage would not have been so great.
Heavy batters
Tom Casey was the batting king of the day, getting four out of five, while Randazzo, Stoffel and Osborne each checked in three out of five, Randazzo and Stoffel each clouted the pill for the circuit. Every member of the Blues managed to get into the "hit run" column again, and it looks now as though they had acquired the habit.
It was purposed to take the Blues to Modesto for a return game next month, but on account of the showing made by the Reds yesterday that game has been canceled, as has the one with Angles Camp for next Sunday. The Angles Camp aggregation belongs to the Central California League, and as they have already been defeated by the Reds, the directors of the Fast Flying Blues decided it best to make an effort to find a team that can keep the Blues awake during the entire matinee. Just what team will be with us next Sunday is unknown at this time, but the fans may rest assured when it is selected it will be the best procurable from the bushes.
For the play by play story of yesterday's happenings in the city park keep reading:
First inning--Hossli, the lead off man for the Reds, took a walk to the first station and was sacrificed to second by Boldt, who was thrown out, Sinpson to Osborne, Arata was out on called strikes and Hossli came home on Farrell's slap to right for a single. Lee got a single to right but when he tried to strech it into a double he found himself thrown out, Bertram to Camozzi to Sorriva, with Farwell scoring on the play. 2 hits, 2 runs, no errors.
Bertram was easily handled by Carrier to Boldt and Tommy Randazzo to the plaudits of the crowd swept a double to center. Silva promenaded on four straight balls. Simpson doubled to right, bring Randazzo across the plate, with Silva right on his heels on a ball passed by Farrell, which also sent Simpson to third. He came in on Casey's sacrifice fly. Stoffel made the third out, Arata to Boldt. 2 hits, 3 runs, no errors
Second inning-- Borden was safe on a Texas leaguer to left, but was thrown out at first by Johnnie Stoffel after he had caught Carrier's fly offering, after which snappy play Richards fanned. One hit, no runs, no errors.
Osborne couldn't get one past the shortstop. Sorriva fanned, Genial Gene was granted free transportation and the same courtesy was extended to Bertram after the pitcher had two strikes on him. But the hope of adding to the run column was abandoned when Randazzo went out Carrier to Boldt. No hits, no runs, no errors
Blues Get Trio
Third inning--King went out on a pop fly to Osborne, Hossli was out on called stricks, and Boldt was handled by Simpson unassisted. No hits, no runs, no errors
Silva was safeon first after Arata dropped the ball and stayed there to watch Simpson go out on a long fly to right field. Casey shot a screamer to short that was too hot to handle. He went to second and Silva to third as Richards overthrew the first sack. Tom mad signs to Stoffel and Johnnie sent a home run to left that cleaned the sacks. Osborne followed the example lately set by Simpson. Sorriva was safe on a slow hit over second and Camozzi ended the inning by shooting one back to King for an easy out to Boldt. Three hits, three runs, one error
Visitors Rally
Fourth Inning-- Arata was safe when his hit that Sorriva ran up on got away and Farwell's hit also took a bad bounce over the shortstop's dome. Lee tripled to right, sending Arata and Farwell home and Borden was safe when Sorriva dropped the ball...
