| Terre Haute had completed 44 games when Gene Joined them on June 16, 1920. With only two-thirds of the season left (95 games), Gene would pitch in 29 games, almost a third of the remaining games. One of Terre Haute's catchers was Tom Casey of San Mateo, CA. Tom and Gene had become friends as early as 1916, when they played together on the Redwood City Sperry Team. They were a winning battery in the 1919 San Francisco Mid-winter League for Granat Brother's Jewelery. Tom is responsible for Gene joining Terre Haute. The story has always be told to me that, Tom contacted Gene and told him to come back east, that he was better than most of the pitchers in the league. Gene did and made the team. For the first two weeks his manager was the famous pitching legend “Three-fingers Brown.” | |
