Week 6, May 1, 1927
Napa, like San Mateo, always seemed to put a team on the field that was expected to win. Previous Napa teams that had visited San Mateo always gave the local fans games to remember. They where still talking about last years loss to Napa. Of the few losses San Mateo suffered in 1926, Napa could lay claim to having dealt one of those defeats to the Blues. They did it last year behind the pitching of Dick Arlett, who this year had been on the mound for Burlingame’s in the Blues early season defeat.
This year, only four members of the previous season’s team would be in the lineup against the Blues. The four players were: Wallace at shortstop, Schutz at first, Coleman behind the plate, and Ernie Bailey in the outfield. Another familiar face would be Ray Garrigan who had left the Blues a few weeks earlier. The new faces included Devereaux at third, Joe Bailey in right field and Burke in left. Belgau would be on the hill, He had pitched the previous week for the Don Lees in a 3-2 victory over the Burlingame B’s. Blues fans were always interested to see how their team compared to any team that put one over on the Burlingame B’s. Gene Belgau would see 4 games for the San Francisco Missions in 1927, with no decisions.
When Sunday’s game was finished the Blues found their selves on the short end of a 4 to 3 score. “Belgau pitched a fine game for the visitors and although from behind the chicken wire he did not appear to have much on the ball except a big out curve, there must heve been a whole lot other stuff that could not be seen with the naked eye.” Napa’s outfielders combined for only one out. Combined with the fact that their pitcher, Gene Camozzi, “was erratic” the lost a game that was never out of their reach of winning. Gene only pitched 7-innings and is rightfully credited for the loss, but his teammates didn’t do him the support that could have turned the tides of defeat. The three errors committed all lead to runs being scored. But it really wasn’t a game until the bottom of the ninth, when the Blues rallied. With two out in the inning, Scherf, Casey, and Stoeffel loaded the bases. Manager Fitzgerald grabbed a bat and preceded to deliver a double to right that brought 3-runs home. Hutton followed by reaching on an infield error. But both base runners were stranded on the bags when Hutton grounded out to end the game.
